The 2D barcode technology has inspire the software giant to come out with its own tag technologies. This is its commercial Microsoft Tag on Youtube
The application for the tags are still the same like linking physical tag object like tag on banner, magazine, poster, products and etc.. to the web site. The tag is useful as a way to bookmark physical objects. World change, we could bookmark anything now, from physical to virtual world.
